Exit polls are a valuable tool to help understand primary voters’ demographic profile and political views. The share of Republican primary voters and caucusgoers holding these views about Trump’s fitness for office and the 2020 election varies from state to state, even as the dominant sentiment remains largely the same. Exit poll data this year finds GOP primary voters divided in their desired approach to abortion policy in a post-Roe v. Wade era. Trump has also racked up support among those primary voters who are the most acutely unhappy with the way things are going in the US. Exit polls for the Iowa Republican caucuses and the New Hampshire, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and California Republican presidential primaries were conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the National Election Pool.

In Tuesday night’s results in Michigan, around one in eight Democrats voted “uncommitted” in the Democratic primary — a protest of the Biden administration’s policies toward Israel and the war in Gaza. In some predominantly Arab American precincts in Dearborn, around three in four Democrats cast a protest vote for uncommitted. Having one in eight Democrats vote uncommitted in an uncontested primary is not wholly unusual. As recently as the last time a Democratic president sought re-election, in 2012, 11 percent of Michigan Democratic caucusgoers voted for “uncommitted” instead of for Barack Obama. Having three in four Democratic primary voters in Arab American communities do it, on the other hand, is an eye-popping figure.

New York CNN —There is a dangerous undercurrent dragging Americans who wade into the political waters out toward the extreme. But much of the national press, basking ashore on the sun-soaked beach, refuses to acknowledge it in a serious manner. Instead, many journalists have grown comfortable glossing over the treacherous rip tide lurking beneath the surface of the water before their very eyes. Embarrassingly, Ron DeSantis has done more in recent days than most in the press to call attention to the matter. After an anemic showing in the Iowa caucuses, long-shot GOP presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson abandoned his bid for the presidential nomination Tuesday, saying he was “driving back to Arkansas” and suspending his campaign. And he angered GOP primary voters with his criticism of Trump. "Asa Hutchinson would have been a relevant and potentially competitive presidential candidate in the pre-MAGA era. In mid-November, Hutchinson crowed about making the Michigan GOP primary ballot, suggesting he was in it for the long haul. Hutchinson was one of the most outspoken GOP critics of Trump.

Two-thirds of Republican voters don’t think President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory was legitimate, despite all evidence to the contrary. Iowa caucusgoers, unlike most of the country, overwhelmingly support banning most or all abortions nationwide. Iowa voters could be asked on the general election ballot to make clear there is no right to abortion guaranteed in their state’s constitution. While Trump held a commanding lead among Iowa caucusgoers without college degrees, college graduates were more closely divided among Trump, former South Carolina Gov. But she made clear this week that she would ultimately support Trump if he’s the nominee.

Views of former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement — or MAGA — reveal a lot about likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers’ candidate preferences ahead of Monday’s GOP caucuses. Overall, the new NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll finds a combined 40% of likely caucusgoers identifying themselves as either “Ultra MAGA” (18%) or “Regular MAGA” (22%) when asked how they view the phrase. Among the likely caucusgoers who say Trump is their first choice, a combined 60% describe themselves as either Ultra MAGA (31%) or Regular MAGA (29%). And DeSantis’ supporters are in the middle: 24% are either Ultra or Regular MAGA; 57% are neutral; and 17% are anti-MAGA. The NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll of Iowa was conducted Jan. 7-12 of 705 likely Republican caucusgoers, and it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.7 percentage points.

By comparison, 19% of likely Iowa caucusgoers say a Trump conviction would make it more likely that they’d back Trump, while 18% say it would make them less likely to support the former president in the general election. As with the other findings from the Iowa poll, the likely caucusgoers backing former U.N. Among Haley’s supporters, 56% say a possible conviction of Trump doesn’t matter to their Nov. 2024 vote choice, but 41% say it would make them less likely to back Trump. By comparison, 70% of DeSantis supporters say it wouldn’t matter to them if Trump was convicted, versus 26% who say it will make them less likely to support the former president. And among Trump’s supporters, 58% say a conviction wouldn’t matter — and an additional 35% say a conviction would make them more likely to support their favored candidate.

Iowans will battle record-setting cold Monday to take part in the first nominating contest of the 2024 presidential election, the Iowa caucus. Both Republicans and Democrats will meet in person at 8 p.m. ET for caucuses, or meetings, but only Republicans will cast ballots for president. Former President Donald Trump is expected to win the GOP caucus by a margin of 20 points or more if polling trends hold. Tonight's caucus also serves as the first official barometer of where the Republican party stands in 2024.

Iowa Republicans were a clear reflection of that on Monday night, delivering the former president an emphatic victory. As clear-cut as his win was, though, Iowa has not historically played the role of kingmaker in the Republican nominating process. He chose to appear at court hearings as a defendant in his legal cases in New York and Washington rather than speak to Iowa voters in the final days before the voting. With its more moderate, educated electorate, New Hampshire presents Trump’s rivals with possibly their best opportunity to slow his march. Trump's strength among Republican voters is beyond dispute, but the road is long and could be bumpy.

Ron DeSantis, who had staked his campaign on a strong showing in Iowa, came in at a distant second, with 21.2% of the vote. “You helped us get a ticket pushed out of the Hawkeye State,” DeSantis told supporters in Iowa Monday night. And about two-thirds – 66% – of the GOP Iowa voters believe President Joe Biden did not legitimately win the presidency in 2020. The state also prides itself on giving a boost to lesser-known contenders who make the effort to meet one-on-one with Hawkeye State voters. It’s not clear how long DeSantis – who had hoped to win Iowa outright and gain momentum in the race – would be able to continue.
